Moussa Dembele has made the headlines every day for a month, but last night for Celtic he proved it has not phased him.
Chris Sutton voiced his support for Celtic’s star forward Moussa Dembele last night via a tweet, following the youngster’s commanding performance in the Hoops’ 3-1 victory of Hearts at Celtic Park.
Dembele, who has been at the forefront of transfer news this entire month, scored and assisted as Celtic blew Craig Levein’s side away in a dominant first half performance.
This January window has been extremely tough for Dembele. Although he has been shown a lot of support from pundits and ex-players, he has also drawn a fair amount of criticism and has been left out of the team following Celtic’s winter training trip to Dubai until last night.
To Dembele’s credit, the forward has remained silent throughout this month of speculation and has trained well. And last night’s performance was a reminder to everyone what all the hype was about in the first place.
Dembele has netted 41 goals in 72 appearances for the Celts since joining from Fulham in 2016.
He played a vital role in Celtic’s domestic treble last season, and should Celtic manage to hold on to him before the window shuts tonight, he will have an important role to play for the team following the news of Leigh Griffiths’ injury (the Scot out for up to 4 weeks).
With Celtic’s Europa League knock-out tie against Zenit St Petersburg coming up, it’s imperative that Dembele continues his scoring form into February if the Bhoys are to have any chance of making it through to the round-of-16.
It would be a massive surprise if Dembele leaves Celtic today, with manager Brendan Rodgers having assured fans that the Frenchman is going nowhere.
