Carragher provides honest assessment of Salah’s Liverpool future

The Reds legend says he hopes the Egyptian will stay for a few years yet but conceded that it is near impossible to fight off the Spanish giants.

Egyptian winger Mohamed Salah has been simply magnificent for Liverpool this season since his arrival from Roma in the summer.

The 25-year-old arrived from Italy for a mere £34.5million (BBC), a modest fee in today’s climate, and his return has led to be arguably the signing of the season by any Premier League side.

Salah has netted a stunning 28 goals so far this season from the flank, becoming the quickest Liverpool player ever to reach 20 Premier League goals.

The last thing Liverpool and their manager Jurgen Klopp need is another Coutinho-esque transfer saga. However, with Salah drawing comparisons to a certain Lionel Messi with his performances, it may not be too long until both Barcelona and Real Madrid inevitably come calling.

Speaking to TalkSport, Carragher explained that he hopes his old club can hold on to their summer arrival for a few years yet, but conceded that when Barca or Real come calling, it is almost impossible for any team to convince the wanted player to stay.

“Well, fingers crossed. He’s only just arrived so we want to enjoy him for as long as we can,” Carragher told TalkSport.

“There’s no doubt when you are a player that good, it’s not just Liverpool’s problem – it’s any club’s problem if Real Madrid or Barcelona ever come for one of your players.”

The former Liverpool centre-half drew an interesting comparison between Salah and Cristiano Ronaldo, pointing out that even Manchester United were unable to hold on to their star despite consistently winning the Premier League and even experiencing a Champions League victory, neither of which Liverpool can currently offer Salah.

“Let’s not forget [Cristiano] Ronaldo when he was possibly the best player in the world left Manchester United; he left when Manchester United were still playing European Cup finals,” Carragher added.

“It’s very difficult, and in some ways you have to just accept it and try and get the biggest fee you can possibly get – as Liverpool did with Coutinho.”
