Bolton Wanderers reportedly leading race for free-agent Stokes

The striker’s goal-scoring ability would be welcomed by Bolton Wanderers to relieve pressure on top scorer Gary Madine.

Bolton Wanderers are reportedly leading the race to land former Arsenal and Celtic striker Anthony Stokes, 29, according to the Daily Record.

The Irish international is currently a free-agent having been released by Hibs following the termination of his contract.

The 29-year-old is a controversial figure and has experienced off the field issues almost everywhere he has gone, however, he has proven quality and a definite eye for goal.

The Daily Record claim that several other clubs from further afield are interested, with the striker attracting interest from Italy, Turkey, China and Greece.

Bolton, who currently sit 20th in the Championship, just three points from safety, could benefit massively from the Irishman’s goals.

Wanderers have netted a mere 27 times in 29 league games this year and are heavily reliant on Gary Madine.

Madine is the top scorer for the club in the league with 10 so far this season, with Sammy Ameobi some way behind in second with four finishes.

Stokes, who has bagged nearly 150 career club goals to date, left Hibs with a season tally of 11 in 21 appearances and would no doubt help relieve some pressure on Madine up top.

Phil Parkinson’s men are in severe danger of facing the drop for the second time in three years, which would be simply disastrous for the North West side.
