Rangers will be looking to emulate their 2016 winning performance against the same team at the same stage of the same competition as they take on Celtic at Hampden on Sunday.

Rangers manager Graeme Murty is seen during the Ladbrokes Scottish Premiership match between Rangers and Kilmarnock at Ibrox Stadium on March 17, 2018 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Former Rangers captain Barry Ferguson has suggested that his old side will defeat Celtic this weekend in the Scottish Cup semi final at Hampden Park.

Speaking to PLZ Soccer on 11th April 2018, Ferguson cited the last encounter between the two sides as evidence that Rangers have it in them to be competitive against the Scottish champions and that anything can happen in the knockout semi final match.

The Scottish Cup presents the last chance for Rangers to put a stop to Celtic’s treble winning quest for a second season in a row, and the club will take great confidence in the fact that the last victory over the Celts came at the same stage of the same competition back in 2016 under then manager Mark Warburton.

In 2016, Rangers were still an outfit belonging to Scotland’s second tier, and are by all means a totally different machine now with a much stronger squad of players.

“I’ll go back to the last game at Ibrox, I thought Rangers did very well, especially up until Celtic got the man sent off,” Ferguson explained.

“It’s a cup semi final, anything can happen, and at some stage Rangers do need to defeat Celtic and I think it will be on Sunday.”

The ex-Gers captain went on to highlight Celtic’s defensive frailties as something which his old side can exploit, but warned that they should be wary of the threat posed by the Hoops’ midfield, who dominated the likes of Sean Goss and Greg Docherty last month at Ibrox.

Having only lost twice domestically under Brendan Rodgers, the onus will definitely be on the Bhoys to go out and reach another Scottish Cup final, but as Ferguson has predicted, the last encounter suggests that the fixture will be anything but a walkover for Scott Brown and co.
