Alan Shearer heaps praise on Tottenham’s Lucas Moura

The Brazilian was Tottenham Hotspur’s standout player against Rochdale on Sunday, bagging his first goal for the club on his first start.

Alan Shearer was very impressed with Tottenham Hotspur’s January arrival Lucas Moura, 25, after a strong display against Rochdale in the FA Cup on Sunday.

The League One side put up a terrific fight against the Premier League giants to earn a historic 2-2 draw and the chance of a replay at Wembley, as the Dale netted a 93rd minute equaliser to cancel out Lucas’ and Dele Alli’s goals.

The Rochdale tie marked the former PSG man’s first start for his new club, having come on as a substitute against Juventus last week in another 2-2 draw.

However, having been added to the fray by Pochettino in the 89th minute in Turin, Sunday’s FA Cup clash was the Spurs’ fans first real glimpse of what the Brazilian has to offer and, following the 25-year-old’s display, they will not be disappointed.

Lucas’s first half performance was an exhibition of his searing pace, tormenting the Rochdale defence as he continually broke behind to create opportunities for his side.

Having signed for a reasonable fee of £25m (BBC), should the Brazilian be able to build upon his FA Cup display, he could prove to be a real coup for the North London club.

Speaking to the BBC following the draw, Shearer was quick to single out Lucas’s performance, expressing how impressed he was by the five-time Ligue 1 winner.

“[Lucas] was the best player in the first half, he was the one that was showing a willingness to use his pace to get in behind,” Shearer said.

“It [was] a hell of a finish, a really, really good finish and he was impressive today.”

Lucas’s pace and finishing ability will be a welcome addition to the Tottenham squad. With Christian Eriksen and Erik Lamela often being preferred on the flanks, the team occasionally lacks out-and-out pace and, with Lucas now an option, they are no longer short on that front.

The Brazilian will add a whole new dimension to Pochettino’s attack and could grow to be a valuable asset to the team, with his ability to get in behind defences to create scoring opportunities for the likes of Kane and Son.

Having played at PSG for six seasons, Lucas is experienced when it comes to European football with nearly 40 appearances under his belt. You would think that he will have a significant role to play in the coming seasons should Tottenham continue to excel in the Champions League.
