Aberdeen were ahead in the table for much of the season, however Rangers have recently re-established themselves as Celtic’s closest challengers.

Aberdeen star Adrew Considine is adamant that the Dons can still finish above Rangers and show the rest of the country that they are in fact the second best team in the SPFL, according to the Sun.

Prior to the loss at the weekend Rangers had enjoyed a terrific run in the league and had launched themselves back into second place. The gap between second and third currently stands at five points, however Aberdeen had a game in hand over Graeme Murty’s men.

With a Scottish Cup clash still to play for, there is plenty of important football to come this campaign and Considine, 30, is confident his side can finish the season strong to both reach the final and claim second spot for the second year running.

“Hopefully the big performance in the Scottish Cup against Kilmarnock can kick us on in the league to regain that second spot,” the defender said.

Graeme Murty, Manager of Rangers reacts during the Ladbrokes Scottish Premiership match between Rangers and Celtic at Ibrox Stadium on March 11, 2018 in Glasgow, Scotland.

“We want our hands on silverware as it is hugely important for the fans, the club and the players. Getting to another final is massive for all of us.

“But we want to get second in the league too. There are nine league games left, so a lot can happen.”

Rangers face a tough ask to bounce back from their Celtic loss against Kilmarnock this weekend, who put up a terrific fight against Aberdeen mid-week in the cup forcing the game to go to penalties.

Steve Clarke has done a fine job since returning to Scotland as Killie coach and, should he be able to mastermind a win against the Gers on Saturday, there may well be a strong chance for Aberdeen to reclaim second if they defeat Dundee.

A win for the Dons and a loss for the Gers would see the gap cut to two points, with Aberdeen then handed the chance to leapfrog Murty’s men with a win in their game in hand.
