The Championship club confirmed via Twitter yesterday that no deal is on the cards for the Hamilton captain.

Derek McInnes’s Aberdeen have been handed a huge boost in their pursuit of Hamilton Academical’s defender Michael Devlin, 24, as reported by the Daily Record.

The Hamilton captain has been out of action for eight months following a serious knee injury and has only six months remaining on his current deal.

As a result he has been given the go-ahead to talk freely with other clubs, with Aberdeen leading the chase for his signature.

A deal had reportedly been agreed between Championship side Preston North End and Hamilton for the 24-year-old, however, Preston confirmed via their official Twitter account yesterday that no such deal was in place.

The tweet read:

Preston have already picked up their own Scottish Premiership star this month in the form of Louis Moult, who joined at the beginning of the window from Motherwell after impressing time and time again.

Devlin is believed to be keen on a move to Pittodrie and both clubs are looking to sort a deal as quickly as possible as they look to avoid dragging out negotiations until the summer.

With a number of clubs seemingly looking to take Scott McKenna away from Aberdeen, Devlin could provide a suitable replacement in defence should the 21-year-old depart.

Hull City have seemingly stepped up their pursuit of the youngster and Nigel Adkins himself was spotted in the Ibrox stands last night, as he took the scouting mission into his own hands to see what the centre-back has to offer in the flesh as Aberdeen and Rangers met.

Devlin has amassed a total of 147 appearances for Accies since his debut in 2011, earning the captaincy ahead of the 2016/2017 season as a 22-year-old.
