Stoke City are joining Aston Villa in next season’s Championship.

Rival fans are already writing off Stoke City’s latest signing, Oghenekaro Peter Etebo – with some predicting the Potters will follow in Aston Villa’s path.

Relegated Stoke announced Etebo’s £6.3 million arrival on Monday afternoon – a deal that caught most people off-guard.

A relative unknown in this country, the 22-year-old ended last season on loan to Las Palmas and is said to have impressed despite the Canary Islanders’ relegation from La Liga.

And he should become increasingly familiar over the next few weeks, as a star of the Nigeria squad due to take part at Russia 2018.

But after two years of heavy spending left Aston Villa in a precarious state ahead of the new season, many believe Stoke’s Etebo signing to be something of a risky move…

However, not everyone agrees…

Like Aston Villa, Stoke will be due parachute payments in each of the next three seasons should they remain a Football League club.

Could Stoke end up like Aston Villa?
