Blackburn Rovers manager Tony Mowbray has used Aston Villa to send a warning to Leeds United, as quoted in Leeds Live.

Mowbray is looking forward to seeing Leeds back in the Premier League next season.

However, the Blackburn boss believes that the Whites will have work to do and will have to invest if they are to compete in the top flight of English football next season.

Mowbray made comments following Rovers’ defeat to Leeds in the Championship at the weekend, a result which has enhanced the Whites’ chances of clinching automatic promotion to the Premier League at the end of the season.

Mowbray told Leeds Live: “I think the football world is looking forward to seeing Leeds in the Premier League to see how they get on against genuine class.

“Because at this moment I don’t know how much money they’ll have to spend in the Premier League if they get there, but they will have to improve.

“It’s not my job to talk about Leeds of course, but if you compare to Villa and Norwich last year, we can only look at where they are in the Premier League and have difficult the gap is, the jump, the class required to make an impact and, yes, you can throw Sheffield United at me of course and they’ve done amazingly well.”

The Blackburn boss added: “I hope they’re more Sheffield United than Norwich or Villa. But lets wait and see. It’ll be exciting for the English game if they can get to the Premier League. But they’ve still got some work to do.”

Staying positive

Leeds are just a few games away from going back to the top flight of English football, and everyone connected with the club should stay positive.

True, Villa and Norwich City have struggled, but Sheffield United are flying in the Premier League.

Once the Whites get promoted, they can start planning for next season, and one suspects that they will make some very good signings to be a competitive team in the Premier League.

Meanwhile, Leeds head coach Bielsa has praised midfielder Mateusz Klich for his performance against Blackburn, and has also given his take on the free-kick goal that Kalvin Phillips scored.

Bielsa told Leeds Live about Klich after the game on Saturday: “Yes. He did a great match today. He unbalanced the match for us. He was the player who unbalanced all the team today.”

The Argentine said about Phillips’s goal: “Kalvin has very good quality with the inside of his foot. He didn’t expect the ball went there as well, to the post where the keeper wasn’t there.

“He thought he was going to shoot as in the last match, to the goalkeeper’s left but it was a beautiful goal.”
