Rival fans have been taunting Tottenham Hotspur after a video emerged which appeared to show Mauricio Pochettino’s dismay at empty seats.
Tottenham took on Cardiff City at a half-empty Wembley on Saturday, much to the shock of Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino.
A gate of just 43,268 watched the clash which Tottenham won 1-0 thanks to an Eric Dier goal.
Those that stayed away were perhaps somewhat vindicated by a turgid game against Neil Warnock’s relegation favourites.
TV cameras picked up Pochettino looking stunned when, after taking his seat in the dugout before kick-off, he looked up and saw the upper tier of the stadium nearly empty.
“Yes, I was a little surprised it was empty,” Pochettino said after the game (The Sun).
“I understand it’s so difficult. We cannot ask for more from our fans. It was a difficult day, the weather was bad. It was not easy.
“But I was surprised the last tier was empty.”
The video footage soon found its way onto social media and rival fans took great relish in mocking the North Londoners over the empty seats.
Spurs are undeniably a big club and it is folly to suggest otherwise.
But it is fair to say there seems to be a discrepancy between how big Tottenham fans believe the club is compared to the view from other teams.
Given a distinct lack of trophies in the modern era, many Spurs fans point to the club’s support base as evidence they are a big club.
Even though the club does operate to a limited capacity for certain matches – of which Cardiff was one – they were still some 13,000 short of the lower capacity.
Rival fans say were quick to suggest Spurs will struggle to fill their new 62,000 seater stadium for games against the lesser clubs when it is eventually finished.
