Rio Ferdinand has suggested that he would have really pushed to bring Scott McTominay to West Ham United this summer.

Scott McTominay continues to shine for Scotland and Rio Ferdinand believes a move to West Ham United would have been ideal.

McTominay just can’t seem to stop scoring when he pulls on a Scotland shirt.

The 26-year-old found the net in Scotland’s 3-0 win over Cyprus on Friday, pushing Steve Clarke’s men towards Euro 2024.

That’s now six goals in his last five caps for Scotland with McTominay becoming a goalscoring sensation for his country.

Clarke is getting a tune out of McTominay as he conversely struggles to make an impact at Manchester United.

Scott McTominay role fading after West Ham United bid

Transfer rumours followed McTominay throughout the summer transfer window and West Ham United seemed very keen.

The Mirror reported in August that West Ham had offered £60million to sign both McTominay and Harry Maguire.

West Ham seemingly saw McTominay as a big midfield addition following Declan Rice’s departure.

That deal didn’t materialise and David Moyes may be a little gutted having witnessed McTominay’s goalscoring impact for Scotland.

This hasn’t even resulted in more first-team minutes for McTominay; he’s played seven minutes of Premier League action for United this season.

West Ham have invested in other midfielders like James Ward-Prowse, Edson Alvarez and Mohammed Kudus, as well as a longer-term addition in Andy Irving.

The route to East London may now be closed for McTominay despite Rio Ferdinand’s hopes.

Rio Ferdinand comments on McTominay to West Ham

Former West Ham and Manchester United defender Ferdinand has now told FIVE that he would have really pushed for McTominay’s signature if he was in charge of the Hammers.

Ferdinand noted that McTominay ‘does a madness’ whenever he puts on a Scotland shirt, calling back to his days as a more attack-minded player.

Ferdinand would ‘definitely’ have gone all-in for McTominay at West Ham, seemingly suggesting that they should have given United an offer they couldn’t refuse.

“He puts on that blue shirt and does a madness,” said Ferdinand. “You know he grew up an attacking player? I think he played up front as well, attacking midfield, number 10 vibes. He was small when he was a kid, he got a late growth spurt.”

“If I was West Ham, I would have bought him – definitely. He’s doing well for Scotland,” he added.

McTominay in this West Ham team could have done some real damage but if it came down to signing McTominay over Alvarez, Ward-Prowse or Kudus, we can only imagine that Hammers fans are happy with how things played out.
