Rio Ferdinand has told Five’s Youtube channel that Patrick Bamford impressed him in Leeds United training recently.

Bamford has shocked many observers with his start to life in the Premier League, with the Leeds striker having six goals to his name already.

Despite being an unreliable finisher in the Championship, Bamford has been hugely clinical at the top level.

And Ferdinand has moved to praise the Leeds man after he scored a hat-trick in his last outing against Aston Villa on Friday evening.

“I have to hold my hands up and say that I didn’t expect him to be doing as well as he’s doing, but the kid has talent and class,” Ferdinand said. “The three finishes at Villa Park were absolutely sublime.

“I watched him train the other day and even then you could see his touch, the way he moves, he understands Bielsa’s system.”

Ferdinand is far from the only person shocked by Bamford’s sharp improvement in his finishing.

When Leeds were promoted there was a widespread belief that they would need to find a more ruthless striker if they were to be successful.

However, at the moment, Rodrigo stands no chance of breaking into Leeds’ team as the front-man, with the Spaniard having to make do with a deeper role so far.

Bamford has simply been too good to be dropped, and he will surely be full of confidence ahead of Leeds’ next game, which comes against Leicester City on Monday.
