In a video with JOE’s official YouTube channel, Rio Ferdinand has said that Wayne Rooney ranks higher among the pantheon of England legends than Harry Kane.

Why Ferdinand sides with Rooney instead of Kane

The main differentiating factor between the two English strikers is that Wayne Rooney won trophies galore, as opposed to the Tottenham Hotspur frontman, according to the Manchester United icon.

“What he’s [Harry Kane] achieved, goals wise and has been ridiculous and he’ll probably break the record [Rooney’s all-time record as England’s top-scorer]. But maybe I’m a bit biased because he’s [Wayne Rooney] my generation.”

“And what I’ve seen [Wayne] Rooney do, he’s crazy. Crazy player.”

Ferdinand continues, “Wazza [Wayne Rooney], he’s on the pedestal high, up in the clouds with the superstars for me. And Wazza won [trophies]. He won stuff as well. When you combine all that together, it puts him in a different place, I think to a Harry Kane.”

“I’m not devaluing what Harry Kane is as a player because as a footballer, he’s a ridiculous player. Great vision, little bit similar in ways to Wazza in that sense.”

“They see the game really well, great passers of the ball, come off, play as a 10, can also play as a 9. But when you add that other element of winning, it’s just unfortunate for Harry [Kane] that he’s at a club [Tottenham] that just don’t win at the moment.”

While the general consensus would also side towards Wayne Rooney instead of Harry Kane, the latter could change a lot of opinions if he spearheads England to a World Cup triumph in December.
