The Manchester United legend found Maupay’s criticism of the Arsenal players refreshing.
The 23-year-old, who can operate as a forward or as an attacking midfielder, scored the winner for Brighton and Hove Albion in their 2-1 victory over the Gunners at home in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon.
Maupay – who cost Brighton £16 million in transfer fees in the summer of 2019, as reported by BBC Sport – found the target with a brilliant effort in the fifth minute of injury time.
The former Brentford star was involved in the incident in the first half which saw Arsenal goalkeeper Bernd Leno suffer a serious knee injury and get carried off on a stretcher, as reported on BBC Sport.
Following the match, Maupay said on BT Sport 1 (5:06pm, June 20, 2020) that “Arsenal players need to learn humility”, and that they were “talking a lot in the first half”, adding that the Gunners “got what they deserved”.
Ferdinand said on BT Sport 1 (5:07pm, June 20, 2020): “What tickled me was the way he spoke about the Arsenal players, being a bit smug, talking when they were up and then obviously they pulled it back and they won, he is asking for a bit of humility.”
The result means that Arsenal are ninth in the Premier League table at the moment, while Brighton are currently 15th in the standings.
While the Gunners are unlikely to finish in the Champions League places, the Seagulls could escape the dreaded drop to the Championship.
