Pundit Rio Ferdinand has told BT Sport that he thought Liverpool ace Fabinho was ‘fantastic’ against Bayern Munich on Tuesday night.

Liverpool were looking to claim a first leg advantage over the German giants in their Champions League clash, but ended up with a goalless draw.

The Reds did have their chances, with Mo Salah and Sadio Mane missing a couple each, whilst Joel Matip put one wide from a Roberto Firmino cross.

Bayern had chances of their own with Serge Gnabry worrying Alisson a couple of times, and Kinglsey Coman smashed one into the side-netting after some slack Liverpool defending.

The tie is finely poised heading into the return leg at the Allianz Arena though, and Liverpool will be delighted to have recorded a clean sheet without Virgil van Dijk.

Fabinho started as a makeshift centre back in Van Dijk’s absence and shackled Robert Lewandowski superbly, pulling off one outstanding challenge on the Polish striker in the second half.

After a slow start to the season following a big-money move from Monaco, Fabinho has become a key man for Liverpool, performing in a whole host of positions.

Now, pundit Ferdinand has praised Fabinho as ‘outstanding’ against Bayern, and believes that he is now having a huge impact at Anfield due to his versatility, feeling that he is invaluable to Jurgen Klopp’s side.

“I thought he was fantastic,” said Ferdinand. “I think for any player to come into the back line, all eyes on him, especially having to replace the talisman, the best player in Virgil van Dijk, he did an admirable job. I thought every question that was asked of him he answered in the right way. He was aggressive when he needed to be, and these types of players are invaluable to a team; someone who can fill in in various positions. He can play right back, he can play centre half now, he can play central midfield, he scores goals, he’s assisting at the moment, so he’s having a great impact on this team; very, very positive,” he added.
