Tottenham Hotspur enjoyed a memorable night in Spain on Tuesday, as they held Real Madrid to a 1-1 draw at the Santiago Bernabeu in the Champions League.
Madrid headed into the match as favourites and were expected to win, but Spurs produced a wonderful display and deservedly earned a point.
Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino made a shock team selection by playing two strikers upfront against the defending European champions.
England international striker Harry Kane was always expected to start, but not many would have expected Fernando Llorente to feature alongside him.
Llorente joined Tottenham from Premier League rivals Swansea City in the summer transfer window.
The Spain international striker was recruited as a back-up option to Kane, but he started in what was Spurs’ biggest game of the season so far.
Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand was following the match for BT Sport, and the former Leeds United and West Ham United defender was impressed with the performance of the 32-year-old.
Ferdinand said about Llorente creating chances on BT Sport 2 during the post-match coverage of the game between Madrid and Tottenham on Tuesday evening (9:41pm, October 17, 2017): “I think he deserves a lot of credit for that, Llorente. Both of those chances he had an integral part in them with his layoffs, a target man bringing other people into the game. He proved his worth tonight.”
