Rio Ferdinand has stated that Aston Villa’s Jacob Ramsey is ‘in my squad’ for England’s 2022 World Cup in Qatar, as he told Vibe with Five.
The Manchester United legend was naming his potential XI for England’s first game of the 2022 World Cup.
Villa had two players recently part of Gareth Southgate’s set-up – Tyrone Mings and Ollie Watkins.
The duo scored as the Three Lions breezed past the Ivory Coast during a friendly encounter on Tuesday night.
Come November, Southgate is going to upset a number of people with not who he picks, but who he leaves out.
As Ferdinand was going through his midfield and attackers, he was then sure to mention that Ramsey makes his squad, as he described his bench as ‘nuts’.
“You see my midfield, Declan, Jude and Foden dropping in,” said Ferdinand.
“Then two strikers. Free role to Sterling. He can go where he wants. Kane holds the ball up and runs behind.
“Jacob Ramsey is in my squad as well. Emile Smith Rowe and Saka. Look at my bench, it’s nuts.”
Whilst Ramsey has been outstanding for Villa this season, it’s probably a little early for the 20-year-old to earn that call.
Not because his performances don’t deserve it, but because of the competition already ahead of him.
Ramsey would be competing with the likes of Phil Foden, Mason Mount, Emile Smith Rowe and Conor Gallagher, to name a few, for a place in the 23.
Unless Ramsey well and truly rips it up at the start of next season, then it’s probably only until after the World Cup will he start making strides in the senior set-up.
But don’t rule him out as a possible wildcard because he still has a chance given the performances he is putting in and the quality of goals he is scoring.
