Tottenham Hotspur need to avoid defeat against CSKA Moscow tomorrow evening to qualify for the Europa League.
Rio Ferdinand has told the London Evening Standard that he believes Tottenham Hotspur should attempt to qualify for the Europa League tomorrow evening.
Spurs take on Monaco at Wembley needing to avoid defeat to claim third place in the group and make it through to the Europa League knockout stages.
While some Spurs fans would welcome a prolonged European campaign, others feel as if their Premier League chances would now be boosted if they went out of Europe.
The lengthy schedule of a Europa League run means that Spurs’ squad would continue to be stretched, with so many fixtures to be played in midweek.
However, Ferdinand insists that Tottenham would benefit from playing in the Europa League, as Mauricio Pochettino could give youngsters like Harry Winks first-team experience.
“Tottenham should do their utmost to salvage some pride and secure qualification to the Europa League against CSKA Moscow tomorrow night,” he said.
“The Europa League may be the lesser competition, but it would provide a great opportunity for coach Mauricio Pochettino to play his fringe players, as well as the youngsters coming through, like Harry Winks.”
Tottenham have won just once in the Champions League this term, after a highly disappointing European campaign.
Spurs were beaten by Monaco in their last European match, which confirmed that they would have no chance of finishing in the top two of their group.
