Rio Ferdinand has laid it on the line to Mauricio Pochettino and Daniel Levy over what Tottenham Hotspur must do this summer.

Tottenham have once again failed to turn their immense promise into silverware this season and it has raised more questions than answers.

Supporters, pundits and even rival fans are fast running out of superlatives to describe Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino and the job he has done in North London.

The former Southampton boss has turned Tottenham into one of the strongest and slickest teams in Europe.

He has achieved the feat without spending gratuitous amounts of money on players, preferring instead to nurture homegrown talent and find rough diamonds he can sculpt into stars for club and country.

But Pochettino’s failure to mount a title challenge coupled with Manchester City’s dominance and the re-emergence of Liverpool under Jurgen Klopp have led to doubts creeping in over the club’s potential for future success.

And assessing how he sees next season shaping up in an interview with talkSPORT, Rio Ferdinand laid it on the line to Pochettino and Spurs chairman Daniel Levy that Spurs face the biggest summer of all the Premier League elite.

“I think this summer is massive for Spurs,” Ferdinand told talkSPORT.

“Spurs have made great strides in the last few years, (finished) second last year, but I believe they’ve got to reinvest in the team.

“They’ve lost their two full backs they had last year – they’re very good the ones they’ve got now – but they (Kyle Walker and Danny Rose) were machines and they’ve lost that dynamic element in the wide areas.

“I believe they’ve got to reinvest. I think what they’ve also got to do that’s as important is to keep hold of the likes of (Harry) Kane, Dele Alli, (Christian) Eriksen, Son (Heung-min) because they’re on the cusp of something exciting this team but it can quickly fall away if things aren’t done to ensure you’re going to be up there fighting year in year out.”

With the club on the verge of moving to their brand new stadium, many pundits and fans suggest Spurs must be frugal while it is being paid off.

Pochettino has proved he can make the team competitive without splashing the cash. But whether he can continue to do that in the long-term remains to be seen.
