Rio Ferdinand has claimed on BT Sport that Tottenham’s eye-catching win over Real Madrid will be the kickstart Harry Winks needs to push on and reach the fullest of his potential.

Spurs secured their place in the last 16 of the Champions League with a 3-1 win over Zinedine Zidane’s side, thanks to a brace from Dele Alli and a tidy finish from Christian Eriksen, before Cristiano Ronaldo scored a consolation for Real.

Winks, 21, has been a key member of the Spurs side throughout October, replacing the injured Mousa Dembele. But Winks’ form in the side saw the fit-again Dembele watch from the substitutes’ bench until the 66th minute, when he was replaced by the Belgium international.

Former England and Manchester United defender Ferdinand claimed that Winks was an “integral” part of Tottenham’s performance on Wednesday night at Wembley, and believes the victory can start something special.

“In recent weeks, I think Harry Winks has done well with England and now Spurs, and tonight is a great result,” Ferdinand said. “It can be the foundation for a career to give a young player the belief and the confidence to push on.

“He was an integral part of the game today, but you have to play as a team and they did that.”

Winks has played in every single minute of Spurs last four Premier League encounters, as well as seeing out the full 90 in Madrid during the reverse fixture that resulted in a 1-1 draw.

Spurs’ number 29 is expected to start Sunday’s midday clash against Crystal Palace at Wembley, in what will be his 13th appearance of the season in all competitions.
