Rio Ferdinand compares the squad depth of Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea.

Tottenham Hotspur are having a wonderful season and have established themselves as the only challengers to Chelsea for the Premier League title.

Just four points separate the two London clubs, and there is still a possibility that Spurs could win the league title this season.

The North London outfit have progressed massively under manager Mauricio Pochettino over the past three years. The Argentine boss has built a squad in his own image, and the White Hart Lane faithful are loving it at the moment.

The fact that Tottenham are above the likes of Manchester City, Manchester United and Arsenal shows just how good they have been this campaign.

Former United defender Rio Ferdinand, though, has pointed out something that Spurs lack – bench strength.

Ferdinand made the observation following Spurs’ 4-2 defeat to Chelsea in the semi-finals of the FA Cup at the Wembley Stadium in London last weekend.

“You look at the difference in the benches and the influences of the benches had in the game,” said Ferdinand on the Live Premier League Tonight show on BT Sport 1 last Sunday evening (broadcast from 6pm, April 23, 2017).

“He (Chelsea manager Antonio Conte) dropped his two main goal-getters and inspirations this season in Costa and Hazard onto the bench. They came on, scored, had influence.

“You look at Spurs’ bench. For many times this season we have sat there and picked that bench apart and thought that’s going to have no impact on the game whatsoever, so you would like to think that that’s an area they are really going to highlight in the next window.”

Tottenham will return to action on Wednesday evening when they take on London rivals Crystal Palace away from home at Selhurst Park in the Premier League. Spurs will head into the match as favourites.
