Rio Ferdinand was critical of Davinson Sanchez and Kieran Tripper for the part they played in Juventus’ second goal against Tottenham in the Champions League clash at Wembley last night, when speaking as a pundit on BT Sport.

It is hard to criticise the Lilywhites, who were arguably the better side over the course of the two legs against Juve, but at the very highest level it seems as if they still have a long way to go before they mature into a side that can win major honours.

“When you step out you’ve got to stop him or foul him [Higuain]. He [Sanchez] played well in the first half especially today. They were all in a great position in the back four but as soon as the striker drops in, as a young defender you stop him from turning and don’t let him play that ball or you foul him. Once Dybala goes through, Trippier should go with him.”

Spurs’ attention will now return to the Premier League with a trip to the south coast to take on Bournemouth next up on the horizon, and nothing less than a win will do, as they look to get over the disappointment of crashing out of Europe’s premier competition.
