Goals from Sam Vokes and Andre Gray did the damage in a game which Liverpool could and probably should have got a result in.
Jurgen Klopp’s side had a whopping 81% and 26 shots at goal – only five were on target – but Burnley came up trumps in the only statistic which mattered: goals.
The defeat was perhaps made more surprising by the way in which Liverpool won 4-3 at Arsenal last week, though maybe that victory highlighted the Gunners’ frailties more than the Reds’ strengths on the day.
Coming into the season, Klopp would have been expected to deliver Champions League qualification at a bare minimum, but Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has intimated that they will not finish in the top four this season.
Of course, it is very early in the season and Ferdinand – who spent 12 years at the Anfield club’s arch rivals United – may only be goading his former club’s nemesis in the name of lighthearted banter.
But Liverpool have shipped five goals in two games, which has to be a concern. Defensive problems cost them regularly last season, and the German manager has work to do to help shore up that issue this time around.
