The Tottenham Hotspur centre-back was in inspired form against the Bundesliga outfit.
Rio Ferdinand raved about Tottenham ace Jan Vertonghen, when speaking as a pundit during BT Sport’s broadcast of the north London outfit’s Champions League clash with Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday night, labelling the Belgian as ‘immense’.
Spurs ended up winning the away leg at Signal Iduna Park 1-0, but the scoreline undoubtedly flattered the visitors, with the German side having been well on top for the entirety on the first half.
Tottenham’s stubborn defence played a key role in their side’s progression through to the quarter-finals of the Champions League, and Vertonghen’s performance in particular typified their defensive solidarity.
Ferdinand offered high words of praise for the Belgium international, highlighting the defender’s superb last-ditch tackle on Marco Reus as a pivotal turning point in the match, when speaking as a pundit during BT Sport’s broadcast of the last 16 tie:
“This is ridiculous. We thought this was a goal. [Jan] Vertonghen has been immense in terms of making last-ditch tackles.”
Vertonghen is widely considered to be one of the best central defenders in world football, and if Tottenham are to have any chance whatsoever of winning Europe’s premier competition this season, the 31-year-old will have to continue his imperious form between now and May.
The Belgian seems to be getting better with age, and what a signing he has proven to be for Spurs, considering the fact that they paid just £12 million for his services in 2012.
