Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has criticised Celtic goalkeeper Craig Gordon for his role in Bayern Munich’s opening goal, as quoted by The Scottish Sun.

Celtic lost 2-1 to Bayern at Celtic Park in the Champions League on Tuesday evening.

A defensive mix-up between Dedryck Boyata and Gordon saw Kingsley Coman score the first goal for Bayern.

Former United defender Ferdinand has strongly criticised Scotland international goalkeeper Gordon.

“The keeper’s killed them really,” The Scottish Sun quotes Ferdinand as saying. “This may be handball but if he stays in the goal, he [Coman] has still got to beat another defender.

“There’s a foot race on and then he’s got to go past the keeper as well. So the keeper’s kind of made it easier for the forward there.”

Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard also criticised Celtic’s defence, and is quoted as saying by The Scottish Sun: “I think it’s poor defending. He doesn’t see the runner on his shoulder.

“There’s no communication between the goalkeeper and his defender and they’re punished heavily for it.”

Over the course of the 90 minutes at Celtic Park on Tuesday evening, hosts Celtic had 47% of the possession, took 12 shots of which four were on target, and earned five corners, according to BBC Sport.

Visitors Bayern had 53% of the possession, took eight shots of which four were on target, and earned four corners, according to BBC Sport.
