Some Arsenal fans on Twitter have been expressing their displeasure after Fred’s headbutt for Manchester United against PSG was only punished with a yellow card.
This comes just a week and a half after Nicolas Pepe was sent off for a similar action against Leeds United, so understandably, Gunner supporters were unhappy with the double standards on show.
There really is no excuse for Fred to have not been sent off, VAR is in effect in the Champions League and it’s the exact same situation Pepe found himself in at Elland Road, so why wasn’t he punished in the same way?
Mikel Arteta was fuming after Pepe’s red, and we can only imagine the Arsenal manager is even angrier after seeing this.
Ultimately, this won’t affect Arsenal in any way as Fred’s ban would have only been for European competitions and he was sent off for a second yellow card eventually in any case, but you have to admit that the inconsistencies in the refereeing are rather annoying.
There’s no doubt that Pepe should have been sent off against Leeds, but the argument that Fred should have also been sent off against PSG is a strong one, and Gunners supporters were quick to take to social media to make their feelings known.
