Steve McManaman doesn’t like the way Trent Alexander-Arnold has been treated and the ‘over the top’ criticism that has been aimed at the Liverpool player.
It has been a season of real struggle for Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool and Trent Alexander-Arnold has been at the heart of the verbal hits.
Well, in recent matches, the 24-year-old has been fighting back, and in some cases, getting into heated confrontations with Arsenal’s, Granit Xhaka.
Against the Premier League leaders and during Liverpool’s 6-1 demolition job of Leeds United on Monday night, Alexander-Arnold was strutting his stuff again.
Steve McManaman thinks the attack-minded right-back has been ‘incredible’, as he shut down the negative talk around the player, as he told Premier League Productions (17/04/23 at 10:25 pm).
“Some of the criticism has been over the top of this kid, let’s be honest,” said McManaman. “Some of it is ridiculous.
“The fact that he has the ability to move from right into central areas, when it’s on and when there is space. It won’t happen every game.
“But the fact that he can go and do that by assisting like he has done, at such a young age, is absolutely incredible.”
TRENT IN MIDFIELD
It has been Liverpool’s biggest problem this season, but throughout the campaign, Klopp has kept his star right-back in his usual position.
But, in recent matches, he has been tucking into the middle of the park from his right-sided fullback spot.
And, surprise, surprise, he has perhaps produced his best football of the season and a clear sign that Klopp needs to play Alexander-Arnold in the midfield for the long run.
