Aston Villa are currently in the midst of a woeful run of form.

Steve Bruce, Manager of Aston Villa looks on during the Sky Bet Championship match between Fulham and Aston Villa at Craven Cottage on April 17, 2017 in London, England.

When speaking to reporters, Villa boss Steve Bruce did not hold back in criticising his players following their 2-1 defeat to Brentford last night, claiming that the amount of mistakes his players are making is bordering on ‘ridiculous’, as quoted by the Express & Star.

The Villans now find themselves sitting outside of the play-off promotion spots in eighth position, three points adrift of sixth placed Sheffield United, after a woeful run that has seen them go five league games without a win.

Steve Bruce was appointed as manager of Villa way back in October 2016, and it could be argued that he has underperformed in his role, what with the relatively large amount of money he has spent.

The 56-year-old addressed the media after his side’s poor display at Griffin Park last night, and delivered a brutal assessment of his players’ performance, as quoted by the Express & Star:

Villa manager Steve Bruce reacts after a near miss during the Sky Bet Championship match between Aston Villa and Middlesbrough at Villa Park on September 12, 2017 in Birmingham, England.

“That (the performance) is what I inherited a year ago and I hoped it had gone away. We are only a week away from a crisis at this club. Everything is a crisis if we don’t win. We have to batten down the hatches and work hard at it. It would be easy to blame injuries but I don’t want to make excuses. We still have 11 out there who should be producing better than that. We certainly weren’t good enough, with or without the ball. I thought performances like that had left us. Unfortunately it has crept back in again. The number of mistakes we have made lately, from experienced players, has been bordering on ridiculous.”

Next up on the agenda for the west Midlands outfit is a trip to promotion rivals Middlesbrough on Saturday, and nothing less than a will will do for Bruce’s men, as they look to keep pace with the top six.
