Neil McCann has slammed Alfredo Morelos on BBC Sportsound after the striker earned a ‘ridiculous’ red card to let Rangers down ‘massively’ at Hibernian on Saturday afternoon.

Alfredo Morelos slammed for ‘ridiculous’ red that let Rangers down at Hibs

Neil McCann has hit out at Alfredo Morelos after the striker got involved in an off-the-ball incident with Marijan Cabraja moments after coming on in Rangers’ visit to Hibernian this Saturday, that left Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side playing the final stages with nine men.

Referee William Collum had already reduced the Gers to 10 men in the 66th-minute when he sent John Lundstram off. Morelos had only come on for the cautioned Antonio Barak in the 62nd-minute, as well, yet followed Lundstram back into the dressing room on 75 minutes.

Rangers had only just regained their advantage when Lundstram saw red for a cynical foul on Martin Boyle. The midfielder hacked the 29-year-old as he sought to speed away, with the Ibrox natives 2-1 up through James Tavernier and Tom Lawrence between Boyle’s hit.

Two sending offs would ultimately prove costly for the Glasgow outfit, with Josh Campbell eventually breaking the Gers’ resistance on 93 minutes. A wonderful half-volley from just outside the area found a way to the back of Jon McLaughlin’s net for a share of the spoils.

Neil McCann fumes at Alfredo Morelos for Easter Road antics

Morelos appeared to swing an elbow at Cabraja off the ball to merit a straight sending off at Easter Road. It marks his first red card of the season so far after four appearances across all competitions. Each of his outings have been from the bench, for a total of 73 minutes.

McCann believed Morelos would have enjoyed opportunities to score a second goal of the term at Hibernian before the Rangers star’s red card. He hit his first – and only – effort of the term to date at home to Kilmarnock on his Premiership campaign debut on August 6.

But instead of putting the cautioned pair of Rocky Bushiri and Ryan Porteous under extra pressure, Morelos gave Hibs a free pass. And Morelos’ antics to follow his red card left ex-Rangers winger McCann incensed, having left Van Bronckhorst and his teammates down.

“Morelos is smiling away. I don’t know what he’s smiling about if he’s elbowed the boy in the face because it’s crazy,” McCann vented.

“Porteous and Bushiri are on yellows, I thought Morelos could ruffle their feathers. A straight red for Morelos is ridiculous. He’s let his side down massively.”
