Chris Sutton labelled claims on BBC Radio 5 Live that Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold is worth ‘£240 million’ if Dortmund’s rising star Jadon Sancho is worth ‘£120 million’.
A Liverpool supporter rang up BBC 606’s flagship radio show and was critical of Sancho and the hype around the winger this summer after watching him in action for England during their friendly win against the Republic of Ireland on Thursday night.
It was well-documented during the delayed summer transfer window that Manchester United wanted to sign the former Watford and Manchester City academy product.
As a result, the Liverpool fan felt that given Alexander-Arnold’s qualities going forward, he would be worth double that of his England teammate, but former Premier League winger, Sutton wasn’t having any of it.
“I am not disagreeing with you [that Trent is a top player],” said Sutton. “I am just find this argument so petty.
“You are judging Sancho too quickly and the fact of the matter is that he has not had a great start to the season. He was very good last season. Give him a chance. And the figure on his head (£120m) isn’t his fault.
“I know we all make comparisons but to say that Trent Alexander-Arnold is twice the money Sancho is and saying he’s worth £240 million is ridiculous. Ridiculous!”
Sancho scored for England during their friendly win against the Republic of Ireland, but he has started the new season in Germany in a pretty poor fashion compared to his standards.
In years to come, England could see both Sancho and Alexander-Arnold ripping opposition teams to bits on the right-hand side.
Alexander-Arnold (22) and Sancho (20) are years away from hitting the peak of their careers and they have already made serious noises in European football – of course, Alexander-Arnold has been heard the most with those European and Premier League medals around his neck.
