Jermaine Jenas has suggested that Tottenham still haven’t recovered from the sales of Kieran Trippier and Kyle Walker, as he told Football London.
During Mauricio Pochettino’s reign at Spurs, the fullbacks played a key role in the forward-thinking, high press and easy-on-the-eye football he brought to the club.
Walker was the number one right-back at Spurs before his departure to Manchester City in 2017, which pushed Trippier into that main spot – but he left the club last summer for Atletico Madrid.
Spurs haven’t really replaced the experienced duo and BBC and BT Sport pundit, Jenas, highlighted that and spoke about how they have been missed on the right-hand side, as he labelled the decisions to part ways with them as ‘ridiculous’.
“The sale of Kieran Trippier was just a very strange one,” Jenas told Football London. “And the dynamic they’ve lost down the right side from losing Trippier and Kyle Walker over a three-year period was a ridiculous decision in my opinion.”
Serge Aurier has been Tottenham’s right-back since, but as he has proven this term that his performances can go from the sublime to the erratic.
Kyle Walker-Peters was another individual used in that position, but he has since been shipped out on-loan to Southampton, whilst the now seemingly forgotten, Juan Foyth, was also used at right-back.
When the summer transfer window re-opens, Jose Mourinho has to target a right-sided fullback in the market because it may come back to bite him in the back if they don’t secure a specialists services in that area for the next campaign.
