Newcastle fans have taken to Twitter in fury after hearing what Rio Ferdinand suggested they do to remove Mike Ashley from the helm.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, the BT Sport pundit told Newcastle fans to round up their money and buy the club from Ashley if they were so unhappy.

Ferdinand said: “Whether the Geordies like it or not… a lot of them hate him and don’t like him but round your money up and take over the club then.”

We simply can’t believe he said this – it reeks of ignorance.

Ashley was close to selling the club back in April for a sum of £300 million, as the BBC covered at the time.

St James’ Park holds 52,405 supporters. If every single one of them followed Ferdinand’s suggestion, they’d need to spend £5,724 each.

The 42-year-old couldn’t have made himself look even more out of touch with these comments, especially during a global pandemic in which people have been hit hard financially.

Some supporters found evidence of Ferdinand potentially being a bit biased with his defence of Ashley.

They discovered that the former Manchester United centre-back’s clothing brand – FIVE – is exclusively sold at Sports Direct, who are owned by Ashley.

In that respect, Ferdinand is surely unlikely to say anything bad about the man who stocks his clothing line.

Let’s see what the Newcastle fans on Twitter have been saying about his comments…
