Brooks Koepka’s decision to leave LIV Golf put added attention on Cam Smith and others who were considering a move back to the PGA Tour.

The PGA Tour introduced the Returning Members Program, aimed at helping Koepka make a smooth return. The initiative allowed any LIV player with a major or Players Championship win since early 2022 to come back under specific terms.

Alongside Koepka, Cam Smith, Bryson DeChambeau, and Jon Rahm also qualified, putting plenty of focus on what their next steps would be.

Publicly, all three players committed to staying with LIV for the next season. But given Koepka reportedly had to pay $30 million just to leave, there’s always the chance they might keep their true intentions quiet for now.

Smith seemed the least likely to make a move back. LIV has built a solid presence in Australia, with Adelaide standing out as its main event.

And after spending time filming with Ripper GC’s captain, Rick Shiels noted on The Rick Shiels Golf Show that Smith didn’t seem interested in hiding how he felt about a possible return to the PGA Tour.

“All I know from him is he absolutely loves LIV. He loves being a captain of his team. He loves the lifestyle. He loves the fact he can spend more time at home with his family,” Shiels said.

“He’s only 31 years old, but he strikes me as someone much more mature,” Shiels added. “He’s very invested in the growth of Australian professionals, growth of the sport of golf in Australia, loves going to Adelaide where the event is in a few weeks.”

Smith’s contentment off the course also seems to be reflected in his game. “I got no indication off him at all that he was not happy,” Shiels continued. “He is a very, very, very happy man. And his golf shows that.”

Smith has a lot to prove after tough 2025 season

It’s completely reasonable that not every world-class player is motivated by the biggest trophies or chasing the most elite tours. For some, other factors take priority, and there’s nothing wrong with that.

Even if LIV Golf isn’t everyone’s favourite, you can see why some players decided to make the switch. The PGA Tour had its issues too. But since making the move, it’s clear that Smith hasn’t been able to hit the same heights he once did.

He was in top form when he left, fresh off his Open Championship win. Last year was rough – he missed all four major cuts and finished 18th in LIV standings with just one top-five finish.

His showing at the Australian Open offers hope heading into 2026. Still, if Smith plans to stick around long-term, LIV will be expecting a lot more from him next season.
