The Dutchman, who spent five years at the Hawthorns, says the Villans failed to recruit well enough.

Former West Bromwich Albion midfielder Richard Sneekes has told BBC West Midlands that Aston Villa failed to recruit well enough during the summer transfer window.

Villa sit 19th in the Championship having won just one of their 11 league matches this season, resulting in the sacking of Roberto Di Matteo on Monday.

But Sneekes, who spent five years at the Hawthorns, believes the Villans’ midfield has been the main reason behind their struggles and suggested that a current Baggies star would ‘work wonders’ at Villa Park.

“Ashley Westwood is suffering from the backlash from the fans, he must realise that they don’t like him,” the Dutchman told BBC West Midland’s football phone-in.

“Mile Jedinak has just not performed at all and Aaron Tshibola is someone for the future, it would be very difficult for him to be played in that holding role.

“Just being a good footballer in this league isn’t enough to win a football game if the work ethic isn’t good enough.

“They haven’t recruited well enough, someone like Claudio Yacob would work wonders.”

Yacob has been a key player for West Brom since his arrival from Argentine side Rosario Central and signed a new two-year contract at the Hawthorns earlier this week, all but ruling out a transfer to Villa Park.

Villa spent more money on transfers than any Championship club – and Real Madrid – this summer, with much of it going on a brand-new strike force of Ross McCormack and Jonathan Kodjia.

Despite this, only three clubs – Cardiff City, Derby County and Ipswich Town – have scored fewer goals than the Villans in this season’s competition.
