Arsenal drew with Newcastle United on Tuesday evening, but the man who made all of the headlines after the game was the Gunners’ manager, Mikel Arteta.
Indeed, the Spaniard got into a touchline row with Eddie Howe, and that has led to a lot of discussion about his decorum on the sidelines.
Of course, this isn’t the first time Arteta has had a spat with another manager. He and Jurgen Klopp seemed to come close to throwing fists at Anfield last season, while his celebrations in the north London derby have rubbed a few up the wrong way as well.
One man who has always been on Arteta’s case is Richard Keys.
The BeIN Sports anchor has had something of a crusade against Arteta for quite some time. Complaining about the fact he doesn’t stay in his technical area on numerous occasions, and branding him as ‘annoying’ in the past.
Keys has gone one step further this time and has called Arteta ‘an embarrassment’.
It’s clear to see that Keys isn’t Arteta’s biggest fan, and, to be honest, he’s blown this whole thing out of proportion.
Yes, Arteta hasn’t behaved how we’d expect a manager to, but even the calmest coaches can lose their heads sometimes.
Jurgen Klopp himself has had rows with the likes of Arteta and Frank Lampard on the touchline, Jose Mourinho once poked a Real Madrid staff member in the eye, while Alex Ferguson had his moments with Roberto Mancini as well.
Could Arteta react more calmly in the future? Of course he could, but this is a sport about emotion and getting carried away, and if we try to stifle that we’ll lose a lot of the passion that makes this sport great.
