They beat City at Anfield in a thriller in January, and went onto knock them out of the Champions League in the quarter-finals.
Despite this, Liverpool could only finish fourth as their inconsistent league form saw them fail to mount a title challenge.
Better is expected this season, and if City slip up, they could stand the best chance of capitalising.
