Wayne Rooney announced his Everton return with a typical match-winning goal on Saturday.

Richard Keys has claimed on his blog that he’s a huge fan of Everton attacker Wayne Rooney and believes the attacker still has plenty to offer.

Rooney enjoyed a fairytale return to Goodison Park on Saturday by scoring on his second debut for the club to give the Toffees a 1-0 win over Stoke City.

At 31, the Manchester United legend, who left Old Trafford as the club’s all-time record goalscorer, won’t be expected to be the talismanic figure he was for the Red Devils over a hugely-successful 13-year stint at the Theatre of Dreams.

But his header on the weekend proves that he still knows where the goal is and Keys says he has “plenty left in the tank”.

Everton boss Ronald Koeman has spent over £100 million on transfers this summer, and fans of the Merseyside club could be forgiven for expecting a much better performance than the one they witnessed against the Potters, but Keys claims they’ll get better.

“I was delighted for Wayne Rooney. It’s no secret that I’m a huge fan,” he wrote on his website.

“The guy has been phenomenal these past 13 years and as I’ve said before – I believe there’s plenty left in the tank.

“It wasn’t a ‘fluid’ Everton performance, but, like City, they too were effective. They’ll get better.”

It’s top four or bust for Koeman this season. With Everton’s outlay, the Dutchman will do well to keep his job by Christmas if the Toffees are not challenging for Champions League qualification.
