Former Ibrox star Richard Gough has spoken highly of Rangers defender Nikola Katic, as quoted in The Herald.

The former Rangers and Scotland international defender has been impressed with Katic, who joined Steven Gerrard’s side from Slaven Belupo in the summer of 2018 for a transfer fee reported by Sky Sports to be worth £2 million.

Gough has outlined the strengths of the 22-year-old Croatia international central defender, and he has also pointed out one weakness that the youngster has as well as revealing the advice he gave to him.

Gough told The Herald about Katic: “He never played for about two months and I thought that was quite unusual. He is raw, he is definitely raw, but he is still young and he started the season really well.

“Maybe, if I was being critical, I would say he lacks a touch of pace. But he puts himself in positions because he reads the game well and doesn’t get caught too much.

“The main thing I said to him was to keep the head, keep your confidence, although that is difficult when you are not playing.”

Promising talent

Katic has played well for Rangers this season, and although there have been times when the youngster has not been great, he has shown more than enough to suggest that he can develop into a superb footballer in the coming years.

According to WhoScored, the 22-year-old defender made 16 starts and two substitute appearances in the Scottish Premiership for Rangers this season, scoring one goal in the process.

Rangers finished second in the Scottish Premiership table this season and also played in the group stage of the Europa League.
