Ibrox side Glasgow Rangers signed nine players this summer so far.
Richard Gough has told Rangers’ official website that Bruno Alves will have a “major impact” for the Gers this season.
The 35-year-old was the first of nine players to arrive at Ibrox under manager Pedro Caixinha this summer.
He had to wait a while before joining up with his Rangers team-mates after helping Portugal – for whom he has 95 caps – in the Confederations Cup last month.
In his absence, Caixinha’s side were knocked out of the Europa League by Progres Niederkorn in arguably the Gers’ worst-ever result.
Nevertheless, Gough, who spent 10 years on the blue half of Glasgow as a player until 1997, says the Portuguese centre-back will benefit from such a leader.
“Let’s hope he keeps himself injury free because he is 35, he’s not a spring chicken anymore, but he looks very strong and dominant,” he told the club’s official website.
“I think he’ll be a major impact on the team defensive-wise anyway and that’s what they need.
“I think Rangers at this moment in time need a few strong characters and leaders and I think there is no doubt that he will bring that to the party.”
