Glasgow Rangers signed Ryan Jack from Aberdeen, and a former Ibrox full-back has backed him for success.

Richard Foster has told BBC Sport that Rangers have landed the perfect player for their kind of system following the signing of Ryan Jack from Aberdeen.

Jack became Pedro Caixinha’s second signing of the summer following the acquisition of Bruno Alves. The 25-year-old joined the Gers on a free transfer following the end of his contract with the Dons (via BBC Sport).

And Foster – who enjoyed two spells at Ibrox and currently plays for Scottish Premiership rivals St Johnstone – has explained why signing Jack was such an astute piece of business by the club.

“What Rangers lacked last season – they had technically decent enough players, Toral, Hyndman, that played latterly – in centre midfield but didn’t have someone who will win the ball back, who will occupy a position that takes a bit of the pressure off the centre-backs,” he told BBC Sport.

“Their full-backs like to play high. There was a lot of pressure last year on the Rangers centre-halves and I think a lot of the time they were unfairly criticised because they got no protection from either the sides or in front of them.

“I think Ryan Jack is a player who will definitely offer that and I think he’s got a lot to offer going forward as well.”

As Foster suggested, the Gers did not really have that midfielder who could sit in front of the back four and provide them with additional support while also driving the team forward this past season – though former boss Mark Warburton was probably hoping that Joey Barton could have been that player following his arrival last summer.

Jack was extremely influential in helping Aberdeen seal second place in the Scottish Premiership and reach both domestic cup finals, so it would hardly be a surprise if his inclusion in the Gers side does lead to the team having a lot more balance and control.
