Portsmouth beat third placed Wigan Athletic to close in on a League One play-off spot.

Goals from Brett Pitman and Jamal Lowe fired Pompey to a 2-1 win with Will Grigg netting a late consolation.

Portsmouth are in seventh place but are level on points with Charlton and Peterborough who sit in fifth and sixth.

Portsmouth owner Michael Eisner reacted with delight to the win, sending a message on Twitter, praising the fans.

He was followed by former Portsmouth defender Ricardo Rocha, who played for the club between 2010 an 2013.

Rocha hailed the win as ‘massive’, and also credited the supporters for the role they played in spurring the team on.

Portsmouth have endured a dramatic decade since winning the FA Cup in 2008, plummeting through the divisions down to League Two.

They won promotion last season and are now bidding to reach the Championship.

Momentum is on their side, and if they reach the play-offs, they will be the team their rivals want to avoid.
