Speaking to Liverpool’s official club website, Rhys Williams has labelled Virgil van Dijk as the best defender in the world.
Williams is finally getting the chance to train with van Dijk again after his return from injury, and the youngster is relishing the opportunity to play alongside the Dutchman.

Williams was speaking about training with the first-team in pre-season.
“I’m training with the best set of defenders in the world in my opinion, and the best defender in the world in Virg. Any time I get with them is a gain,” Williams said.
“It’s massive [to have Gomez, Matip and Van Dijk back in training]. We had major issues last season at centre-back, which obviously led to me coming in and doing the best I could. But seeing them come back – they’re all big characters amongst the boys so having them back is a massive boost for the team.”
The best in the world?
Williams says that van Dijk is the best defender in the world, and based on what we’ve seen over the past three years, it’s hard to disagree.
However, after almost a year on the sidelines with a serious knee injury, the question has to be raised as to whether or not he’ll be the same player.
One of van Dijk’s greatest assets is his pace, so will he have lost a yard or two during his spell on the sidelines? These are questions we need answers to.
Fingers crossed the Dutchman is able to return to his very best, but after a year out, that will be tough to do.
