Rhian Brewster has paid tribute to his Liverpool ‘brothers’, Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez.
There was an emotional moment in Austria last night as the two Liverpool stalwarts were substituted into the pre-season friendly against Hertha Berlin.
This was the pair’s first bit of football since separate knee injuries way back in October.
It has been a long and equally-arduous road for both, but it was fitting for Reds boss Jurgen Klopp to introduce the duo at the same time last night.
And here’s how former Liverpool hitman Brewster reacted on Instagram:
Vital
This could be enormous for Klopp if the two can stay fit during the whole 2021-22 campaign.
With every long-term injury, it’s a case of playing it by ear, but the Liverpool boss won’t be able to help but look ahead and wonder what the upcoming season could hold if he can keep them healthy for the next nine months.
These two were the club’s first-choice pairing in defence when Klopp’s side cruised to a Premier League title in 2020.
And as it were, they finished 17 points behind Manchester City without them for the vast majority of last season.
That’s the difference they make. Their title hopes next term undeniably hinge on these two, despite Joel Matip also being available again and Ibrahima Konate’s arrival.
