Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton’s Ryder Cup future is shrouded in serious doubt.
LIV Golf announced it would no longer pay players’ fines for playing on the DP World Tour this season, putting Rahm and Hatton in an extremely difficult situation.
Players must maintain their DP World Tour membership to play on Europe’s Ryder Cup team, so if the European pair elect not to pay their own fines, they could risk missing out on the competition at Adare Manor in 2027.
They are currently appealing the DP World Tour’s fines, which reportedly total around $3 million. Both players are adamant that they will not be paying them.
Rory McIlroy disagrees with this decision, recently saying that the LIV duo should simply pay the fines to play in the Ryder Cup. Hatton and Rahm are one of Europe’s greatest-ever pairings, so this is a big problem for the team, with no resolution in sight.

Despite these major complications, golf analyst Rex Hoggard remains confident that both Rahm and Hatton will play for Team Europe at Adare Manor.
And he said that if these players decide to reach into their own pockets and pay the fines, it would be an incredible motivating factor for the Europeans, especially when the Americans are being paid to play.
Speaking on the Golf Channel podcast with Rex and Lav, he said, “We know Luke Donald is a brilliant captain. We know all the strings he pulled the last two matches. He’s just a brilliant tactician.
“Can you imagine what they do on that side if you had two players who want to play so bad that they reached into their pocket for no small amount of money? As you pointed out, this is probably multi-millions of dollars coming from millionaires.
“I don’t like pocket watching. I don’t like spending other people’s money either. But still, I’m with you. It’s pretty cool. It kind of speaks to sort of, let’s call it the unity of that team. There’s no doubt in my mind. I do believe that both Rahm and Hatton are just making a principal stance right now.
“I believe when push came to shove, and the Ryder Cup was on the line, they would pay it or find a way to get someone else to pay it.”

One of the big issues surrounding this drama is that most of it is taking place behind closed doors.
When asked for an update on his appeal to the DP World Tour, Hatton said he couldn’t give one. His legal team is going back and forth with the tour in a process that seems to be dragging on forever.
LIV Golf star Lee Westwood, who has 25 wins on the European Tour, called for more clarity and a clear end date for these proceedings.
He posted to X, “The easy solution is for the @DPWorldTour to set a date for Jon and Tyrell’s appeal. Instead of the kicking of the can.”
Right now, we have no idea how long this process will take, so an end date would be greatly appreciated so we can get this resolved before 2027!
