Newcastle United surprised everybody last summer when they moved to sign Aston Villa centre-back Ciaran Clark.

Despite warnings from Villa fans, Clark has gone onto play a key role for the club, and limit the impact of another summer signing, Grant Hanley.

The Chronicle report Hanley is up for sale after just one season, and is expected to be sold to a Championship club.

Clark’s former club Aston Villa would be smart to make a move.

Hanley’s spell at Newcastle may not have worked out, but there is a reason the Toon paid £6 million to sign him last summer.

The 25-year-old has plenty of experience in the Championship with Blackburn Rovers, and is a Scotland international.

He will also have a point to prove this season if he makes the switch, having been overlooked at Newcastle.

Newcastle are heading back to the Premier League, a path Aston Villa want to follow next season.

Adding Hanley into the mix will strengthen their defence further and add leadership qualities into a talented group which has for various reasons not quite managed to hit their stride this season.
