Speaking on the Wrighty’s House Podcast, Ian Wright has been waxing-lyrical over Gabriel Jesus after his remarkable performance against Leicester at the weekend.

The Brazilian attacker was excellent against the Foxes on Saturday, netting a fantastic brace at the Emirates, and he ran Jonny Evans absolutely ragged.

Wright was blown away by how often Jesus was getting the better of Evans, and the pundit even claims that the Northern Irishman may have been contemplating retirement after this game.

What’s been said?

Wright spoke about Jesus getting the better of Evans.

“I’m not being disrespectful to Jonny Evans, but the fact is it was the kind of game, and the only thing that will keep him going is that it was Jesus and we’re talking about an elite player in this league. It was the kind of game where you start thinking maybe I need to start thinking about retirement,” Wright said.

“For Jesus, for the goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale to knock a long ball and Jesus to get the flick-on and go and get the flick on before the defender has got to it and get the shot off is where you start to think ‘wow, I’m losing my powers’.

“You go into the dressing room you think ‘well, there was a time where that doesn’t happen.’”

Must be awful

It must be an absolutely awful feeling for Evans to go back into the dressing room after being given the run around by Jesus for 90 minutes.

The 34-year-old didn’t get near Jesus at the weekend, and when you have a game like that at that age, you can’t help but think about what the future holds.

Of course, there’s no shame in being run ragged by Jesus, but, as Wright says, this may not have happened to Evans three or four years ago.
