Tottenham Hotspur allegedly won’t be signing Wilmar Barrios in January – but Real Madrid might.
According to Marca, Boca Juniors midfielder Wilmar Barrios is now a target for Real Madrid, with talk of a move to Tottenham Hotspur now dying down ahead of the January transfer window.
Barrios, 25, impressed at the World Cup with Colombia over the summer, and his performances in Russia sparked speculation over his future, before he decided to stay until at least January.
The combative midfielder is playing a key role in the Boca midfield, and having stayed in order to play their Copa Libertadores campaign, Boca are on the verge of a final against rivals River Plate.
Barrios would still be expected to move on in January, and whilst Argentinian radio station El Crack Deportivo reported earlier this month that Tottenham are set to strike a £20million deal to sign Barrios in January, ESPN claim no deal is on the table.
Tottenham seemingly won’t be signing Barrios in January, but Real Madrid just might, as Marca claim that the Spanish giants are now weighing up a move to lure the midfielder to the Bernabeu when the transfer window re-opens.
Barrios would surely be signed as cover for holding midfielder Casemiro, providing similar attributes without breaking the bank, with Real scouts allegedly watching him recently.
Their report even states that Spurs did have talks over a deal for Barrios but Boca halted a move, leaving Real to lead the race for his signature – and with some Tottenham fans unsure about whether he is really good enough for Mauricio Pochettino’s side, links to Real may be a shock to those supporters.
