Rangers could be set to receive a surprise £500,000 windfall, according to reports in England.

Wigan Today claims that is the amount still owed to Rangers by Wigan Athletic, after Josh Windass’s transfer to the DW Stadium two years ago.

The total cost of Windass’s deal is rumoured to have been around £2.5 million.

But Wigan are now said to have accepted an offer from Sheffield Wednesday, which would appear to be much, much lower.

Windass, who scored or made 32 goals in 73 games for Rangers, impressed while on loan to Wednesday last season.

And the 26-year-old has had interest from Steven Gerrard’s side, as well as Nottingham Forest, Bristol City and Middlesbrough in the current transfer window, according to Yorkshire Live.

But the latter publication claims a return to Hillsborough is edging closer for Windass.

The exact amount Wednesday are paying for Windass remains to be seen, although the £500,000 figure owed to Rangers is believed to have been the starting point in negotiations, according to Wigan Today.

Transfermarkt claims Rangers have spent more than £10m this summer and recouped just £700,000.
