Hearts and Hibs are interested in rescuing Greg Stewart after a disastrous season at Birmingham City – but Rangers are nowhere to be seen.

Greg Stewart could be offered an escape from his Birmingham City nightmare this summer.

The Scottish Sun report that newly promoted Hibernian want the former Dundee forward as a potential replacement for Nottingham Forest-bound talisman Jason Cummings.

The report adds that Birmingham boss Harry Redknapp will take a look at Stewart in pre-season before deciding whether to let him go. And, if he does, Edinburgh rivals Hearts may also look to pounce, although this could depend on whether manager Derek McInnes remains at Pittodrie.

However, it appears that interest from Rangers is not forthcoming. Back in 2016, the 27-year-old was linked relentlessly with a marquee move to Ibrox.

The Scottish Sun claimed that then-manager Mark Warburton had made an approach in the January transfer window and was also plotting another move in the summer. Netting 15 goals from a wide role and being nominated for the league’s Player of the Year award, few questioned why Rangers were so interested in making Stewart their go-to creative hub.

However, Stewart joined Birmingham instead for £1 million, per the Evening Telegraph. And it’s fair to say the move has not quite worked out as planned. In 22 games in all competitions, Stewart failed to score a single goal.

The fact that he only played five minutes of football after Redknapp took over in late April suggests that Stewart faces a challenge convincing the veteran boss that he deserves a second chance.

And, if not, it appears that Rangers are all too happy for Stewart to pass them by.
