Rangers have been linked with Gary Cahill, but a deal for the free agent defender is looking less and less likely after this weekend’s reports.
The Sun reported in July that Rangers were looking to sign Cahill, and were prepared to offer him £35,000-a-week to make the move to Ibrox.
Cahill is a free agent having decided to leave Crystal Palace at the end of his contract this summer.
Steven Gerrard played with Cahill for England, and a reunion could have been appealing to the 35-year-old as he seeks a new club.
Now though, The Sun (15/08, p63) claim that Rangers crashing out of the Champions League qualifiers at the hands of Malmo may end the Cahill pursuit.
Losing to the Swedish side last week has hit Rangers’ budget, and a contract worth almost £2million-a-year for Cahill doesn’t seem to be a priority now.

Additionally, The Sunday Mirror (15/08, p73) claim that Norwich City now want to sign Cahill, and they have real hope of convincing him to join.
With Connor Goldson, Filip Helander, Leon Balogun, Jack Simpson and Nikola Katic all at Ibrox already, another centre back shouldn’t really be at the top of Rangers’ list – and it now looks like Cahill will be going elsewhere after all.
